3D modeling of a strongbox
In this Blender Project I had a little help of Affinity Designer and Quixel Mixer
Creating a 3D model of a strongbox in a blender
Adding small details in a Blender project
“No! you can’t have it, it’s mine!” It’s something that people have said since the dawn of time. As we grew better at making stuff, we got better at keeping it from each other. A treasure should not be easy to get your hands on.
Digging it down and hiding it on a remote island is not enough. It needs to be secure in a stylish box. I decided to make one in a blender modeling project. My intent was for it to be in the context of pirates.
But it fits just as well in the middle ages or in a fantasy setting.
The magic of subdiv modeling in a blender project
If you don’t have a powerful computer, you need to be resourceful. That meant figuring out a process that helps with the extra details without burning my computer to a crisp. I used a Subdiv-modeling cage and a displacement modifier. It allows me to create a high poly mesh without the trouble of editing it on a slow computer.
It takes some work in a program such as Affinity Designer, but it is doable. The engraving and metalwork of the front add details to the model without adding topology. One thing I might do differently If I were to do a similar project is to bake the details of the handles into a less complicated mesh. There is a big difference between editing a high poly mesh and applying modifiers to one.
Seamless textures to keep topology down
The plates under the lid of the strongbox are good examples of my process. You can see an early version of my Spanish Silver Dollar. I have made improvements to this model if you would like a look. To keep the polygon count down, I created a seamless texture. It was more work to create those assets, but it was worth that hassle.
If I were to start over on this model, I would change some things. I would bake the curved segments of the handles into a cylindrical shape keeping down the polygon count without really losing any details.
check out the model on sketchfab
Sketchfab is amazing. You can check the topology and textures at your own pace. It also saves me tons of work on videos. This project was interesting. I learned a lot. There is a lot I can use this model for in future projects. The most recent is a Tropical Island Scene I made in unreal engine 4.25. I hope you liked this model.
This was a very interesting project to do, I learned a lot and there were several projects that I could use this model for. I hope you liked this model, please have a look around this site or browse my portfolio on Sketchfab.
