Creating a 3D Model of an arrow
Arrows
This 3D model is supposed to be my take on a Native American arrow.
I have taken some artistic freedom. A native American arrow used to have markings designating the tribe, which my model lacks.
I have been working on a scene in Unreal Engine, of which this arrow will be a part. To be able to use a considerable number of models, I have tried to keep the Polygon number down. Swarms of arrows are something we have all seen in movies and games.
Adding strings to the model
Details are everything. For this model, the strings tie the arrowhead to the shaft. Without that detail, it looks less authentic. Creating leather strings in Blender is easy. Giving them material in Quixel Mixer is also a quick process. Keeping the polygon count down is a hassle.
Baking the details of the strings onto the arrow model solves the problem.
It is the method of choice to keep details but lower the polygon count.
I am happy with the result of these feathers. But the detail also makes it repetitive. I am thinking of making a base version in Quixel Mixer and adding the distinguishing features in Blender or Unreal.

I really like Sketchfab
Sketchfab is the best way that I know of to showcase 3D-Models. It makes it easy to check the topology and the materials. The client does not have to trust that the model is as I claim. For me, it saves a lot of time figuring out what areas of a model might interest a potential client. Why not check out my Sketchfab Portfolio and see for yourself.
